Urs Festival: Time: October – November Urs Festival of Ajmer Sharif is held in the holy town of Ajmer in Rajasthan, India. The Urs Festival in Ajmer, Rajasthan is marked with quwwallis - sung at night. The celebrations the unite people of all faiths, and the complete town is decorated with buntings and wears the spirit of festivity.

Urs Festival is an occasion for thousands of devout to congregate at the shrine and offer their prayers. All of Ajmer seems to be in a festive mood and several programmes are organised to mark the festivals.

Activities:

The pilgrims who come to seek the blessings of the Khwaja make rich offerings called nazrana at the holy spot where the saint has been entombed. The offerings of rose and jasmine flowers, sandalwood paste, perfumes and incense contribute to the fragrance that floats in the air inside the shrine. Also offered by devotees are the chadar, ghilaph and neema, which are votive offerings for the tomb.

Pushkar Fair

Pushkar Fair: Another attraction of Pushkar Town is the world famous Pushkar Fair (Comes in November). The fair is embellished with kaleidoscopic events, besides trading of horses, camels, cows and bulls, the stimulating camel-cart races and cultural events are also organized. The camels are festooned with motley of colors and ornaments, this unique race is cherished by thousands of visitors coming from all over the world. Pushkar felicitate a unique accommodation in form of tents on the cool sand which itself a diverse attraction for its visitors. The accommodation is equipped with all kind of comfortable facilities added with an extra charm of bonfire during nights under the open sky. Colorful cloths, household items and leather goods can be purchased during the fair.

Baghera : Ajmer Excusions

Baghera

Situated at 107 km from Ajmer, Southeast of Ajmer and is famous for its ancient archaeological relics. Founded by the Chauhana king Someswara, Baghera’s original name was Vyageraka as mentioned in a rock inscription in Bijoliya dating back to 1226 AD.

Main Attractions at Baghera

Lord Vishnu Temple: Baghera is mainly known for its ancient monuments, especially the temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Varaha Avatar temple, as it is known, depicts Vishnu in the form of a boar, his third avatar (incarnation). The temple is now located within a fairly new building near the Varaha Sagar, a sacred tank. Towards the west of the Varaha Sagar is a ruined 10th century temple as well as a decorated gateway leading into the house of the chief of Baghera.

Jain Images: A little distance away from Baghera is an archeological site, in a rocky area are Jain rock images which seems to loom straight out of the ground. In ancient times the Jains had built a temple here of which these rock statues are the only things that have survived.

Foyy Sagar Lake : Ajmer Excusions

Pushkar : Ajmer Excursions

Pushkar: Pushkar is 11 km from Ajmer, Pushkar is one of the most important Hindu pilgrim places. Pushkar is sacred to the Hindus and the lake is believed to have been created by Lord Brahma himself and has the same sanctity for Hindus as Mansarover in Tibet. No pilgrimage is complete without a visit to Pushkar. For most believers it is essential to visit Pushkar at least once in their lifetime. Today, there are as many as 400 temples in Pushkar and the lake is circled by 52 ghats built over several years by several kings and nobles. The most important temples are dedicated to Lord Brahma (This is the only temple in the world where Lord Brahma is worshiped and the main attraction of Pushkar. The temple has a special position in Hindu pantheons. There is life-size four-armed idol of Lord Brahma - the creator in the vestibule. The temple has marble floors and stairs and coins have been put by the devotees to mark the birth or deaths of the loved ones), Shiva, Badri Narayan, Varaha, Gayatri and Savitri. The important ghats are the Varaha, Brahma and Gau. The lake is situated on the edge of the desert, surrounded by hills on three sides, and is separated from Ajmer by ‘Nag Pahar’-the snake mountain. On this mountain are situated the Panchkund and the cave of the saint Agastya. It is believed that Kalidas-the 4th century Sanskrit poet and playwright, chose the setting for his masterpiece Abhigyanam Shakuntalam in this forest heritage. The pilgrims take a holy dip in the Pushkar Lake.

It is also the site for one of the largest cattle fairs in the world. For 12 days in the month of Kartik, (falls sometime in November), the sleepy little town is taken over by lakhs of animals and visitors. The cattle fair and the mela are believed to be the most colourful animal fair in the world. The beauty of rural Rajasthan gets concentrated within the radius of a few miles and the fair is overwhelming in its magnitude and visual impact. The fair attracts many people many of whom are tourists. It prides itself on being the site of the only temple of the Hindu God of Creation, Brahma. Its location near Delhi, yet at the heart of Rajasthan, makes Pushkar the perfect destination for travelers. A night safari to the desert in the colourfully decked up camel buggies is a most romantic experience.
